Switching off error handling for one question

I've got a drag and drop ranking question that I want to be able to allow a respondent to select 1-3 items in a list.

Thought this would be simple to code but it isn't.  My thoughts were to turn off the standard error handler and then ensure one option has been checked then do another handler for over 3 choices.  Or failing that run something in that says if the selected is less than 3 but greater than 1, ignore the error and move on...

Am I missing something really obvious?

The Community Question Library's "Custom Drag-and-Drop Ranking" adds support for a range of items to rank:

https://sawtoothsoftware.com/community-question-library/2239-custom-drag-and-drop-ranking

You can download it from that link, import it into your local question library in Lighthouse Studio, and then add an instance of it to your current questionnaire.
