Importance of length of items and consistency of length?

For MaxDiff studies, is there an optimal or recommended length that items should stick around? And further, is it preferred to have all items be of a similar length? Or is it ok for items to vary considerably in length. I can't find any research or documentation to address these questions. Thanks!

Not aware of any research on this.  I'd recommend you try to convey the meaning of the item with as few as words as possible.  I don't know if the length of the text itself creates some sort of psychological bias, holding all else equal.  Would be difficult to test, because adding more words could potentially change the meaning of an item for some respondents.
