Instructions for Field Administrators

Steps to administer SSI Web CAPI Web Surveys:

  1. Download SSI Web CAPI and save it onto the computer.
    • NOTE: If you are using either SSI Web 7.0.24 or 7.0.26 please use SSI Web CAPI version 2.2.
    • If you must run SSI Web CAPI on a version of Windows prior to Windows 2000 SP3, please contact us.
  2. Install SSI Web CAPI by double clicking the downloaded file. An SSI Web CAPI icon will appear on your desktop.
  3. A .CAPI file will be sent to you by the survey author. Save it onto the computer. Load the .CAPI file into "SSI Web CAPI" by starting up the "SSI Web CAPI" program, clicking "Load Study", and navigating to the .CAPI file saved on the computer.
  4. Begin administering the survey by clicking "Start Survey" within the "SSI Web CAPI" program.
  5. Collect the data from the survey by clicking "Save Copy of Data." This will produce a .dat file that will need to be sent back (emailed) to the survey author.

Instructions for Survey Authors

SSI Web generally is used for interviewing over the Internet. But, SSI Web studies can also be used for interviewing in "CAPI" mode (Computer Aided Personal Interview), which generally refers to data collection using a laptop or a PC not connected to the internet.

Steps for conducting a CAPI survey:

  1. Create a web survey using SSI Web
  2. Within SSI Web click Field | Create CAPI Packages to create a "CAPI package," which is a single file (.CAPI extension) that contains all the information necessary to run the study.
  3. Install the "SSI Web CAPI" program on the field computers where surveys will be administered. SSI Web CAPI is free to download. Download SSI Web CAPI
    • SSI Web 7.0.24 and 7.0.26 users please download and use SSI Web CAPI version 2.2.
    • If you must run SSI Web CAPI on a version of Windows prior to Windows 2000 SP3, please contact us
  4. Email or otherwise deliver the .CAPI file (created in a previous step) to the field computers.
  5. Load the .CAPI file onto the field computer by starting up the "SSI Web CAPI" program, clicking "Load Study", and navigating to the .CAPI file saved on the computer.
  6. Begin administering the survey by clicking "Start Survey" within the "SSI Web CAPI" program.
  7. Collect the data from the survey by clicking "Save Copy of Data." This will produce a .dat file that will need to be sent back (emailed) to the computer where the survey was created.
  8. Once the .dat file is back on the computer where the survey was created it can be imported into SSI Web by clicking on Field | Accumulate CAPI Data File(s). The data is now ready to be exported through SSI Web.
